How to turn a company event into a warm celebration people enjoy

Most company events are organised correctly and remembered by nobody. The difference between an obligation and a celebration is rarely the budget. It is whether people felt seen.

Start with the reason, not the programme

"Annual party" is not a reason. "We want to thank the team for a hard year" or "we want two offices to finally meet" is. When the reason is clear, every later decision — the place, the length, the speeches — becomes easier.

Say the reason out loud at the beginning of the evening, in two sentences. People relax when they know why they are there.

Make it smaller than you think

  • Round or long shared tables instead of a hall with a stage. People talk to those they sit with.
  • Warm, low light. Office lighting produces office conversations.
  • Music that allows talking. If people have to shout, they leave early.
  • A short official part. Ten minutes of thanks is remembered; forty minutes of slides is endured.

Thank people by name

Generic gratitude warms nobody. One specific sentence about a specific person does: what they did, and what it changed for others.

Ask team leads in advance to prepare one true story about their team. Stories travel around the tables for the rest of the evening.

Tip

Leave the performance ratings at the office. A celebration is for the things that never appear in a report.

Involve people without forcing them

Compulsory games are the fastest way to lose a room. Offer things people can join at their own pace:

  • A wall of photos from the year, where everyone finds themselves.
  • A table quiz about the company's history, played in mixed teams.
  • A corner where colleagues can leave a message for the team or for someone who is celebrating — a work anniversary, a retirement, a farewell.

Collect voices instead of signatures

The card signed by forty people says "Good luck!" forty times. A voice says more. With Memilove you create a page for the event and put a QR poster on the tables. Colleagues scan it with their own phone and record a greeting of up to two minutes, adding a photo if they like — without installing anything or creating an account.

  • Works well for retirements, farewells, work anniversaries and company birthdays.
  • Photos from guests can be shown on a screen in the room as a live wall.
  • The organiser listens to everything afterwards and downloads it in one file.
  • The price is fixed per event and does not depend on how many people take part.

People do not keep the gift. They keep the feeling that their work mattered to somebody.

After the event

Send a thank-you message the next working day while the mood is still alive. Add a few photos, and if the celebration was for one person, hand them the collected greetings. That is the part they will play again at home.
