Questions for guests: how to get people talking at a wedding or birthday

Hand a guest a microphone and ask for a greeting, and most will say "Congratulations, all the best" and pass it on. Ask them when they first met the couple, and you get a story nobody else at the table knew.

Why "say something" does not work

A free greeting asks the guest to invent the content, the tone and the length all at once, on the spot, often with people watching. That is why so many greetings sound the same.

A question removes most of that work. The guest does not have to decide what to say — only to remember. And memories are exactly what the hosts will want to hear again in a year.

What makes a good question

  • It asks for a moment, not an opinion. "What is your favourite memory with them?" works better than "What do you think of them?".
  • It can be answered in a minute. One story, one wish, one piece of advice.
  • It fits everyone. A colleague and a grandmother should both be able to answer.
  • It has a little play in it. "Which song describes this couple?" makes people smile before they speak.

Questions for a wedding

  • When did you first meet the couple, and what was your first impression?
  • What one piece of advice would you give the newlyweds for a happy marriage?
  • How do you picture the newlyweds ten years from now?
  • What secret about the bride or groom can you reveal today?
  • Which song best describes this couple, and why?

Questions for a birthday or jubilee

  • What is your funniest memory with the birthday person?
  • Which three words describe the birthday person best?
  • What adventure would you like to share with them next year?
  • What have you learned from them?
  • Which story about them should every guest hear?
  • What would you like to thank them for today?
Tip

Mix serious and light questions. A guest who does not feel like a heartfelt speech will happily answer which superpower the birthday person would have.

How to ask them without a microphone

Passing a microphone around a table makes shy guests hide. It works better when every guest can answer privately, on their own phone, whenever they feel ready.

This is how questions for guests work in Memilove. A QR poster stands on the table; the guest scans it and chooses: record a free voice greeting, or answer one of your questions. Questions for weddings, birthdays, jubilees and other celebrations are already prepared in Lithuanian, English and Polish — you switch off the ones you do not like, change the order or add your own.

  • Random or in order. A guest gets a random question and can ask for another one, or all guests go through your list one by one.
  • One more answer. After a greeting the guest can answer another question without typing their name again.
  • On the TV screen. If the live wall is on, the screen shows the question and the photo of the guest who answered — and others want to try too.
  • In the video. Answers can be included in the greetings video together with the question.
Tip

Questions for guests cost nothing extra. They are part of the greetings service and are switched on in the celebration portal.

Prepare it in ten minutes

  1. Order greetings for your celebration and pick its type — the matching questions appear on their own.
  2. In the portal, switch on questions for guests and keep the five to eight you like most.
  3. Print the QR poster and put it where guests wait: next to the cake, at the bar, on every table.

After the celebration you will have not only "all the best", but stories, advice and memories — in the voices of the people who were there.
